If you're looking for homely Taiwanese food (family style of course), Chef's is for you. The standouts here are not the things that you can find in every Chinese restaurant menu, like kung pao chicken for fried rice. Rather, things like the Chinese okra w/somen noodle (絲瓜麵線) and stinky tofu (麻辣臭豆腐) make this place unique. Though the Rowland Heights food scene has changed in the last decades with longstanding Taiwanese and Cantonese restaurants making way for Sichuan and other popular mainland cuinese styles, Chef's has substantial holding power, not just for being one of the dwindling Taiwanese restaurants, but being a good Taiwanese restaurant that gets mom and her friends' stamps of approval. Note that is place is cash only.

If you are looking for a homey Chinese spot this is it! My favorite is their intestine, pork blood, tofu pot extra spicy. The beef in black pepper sauce. The ladies there are also super nice unlike most Chinese restaurants that are small and homelike.

Authentic Taiwanese flavors in a cozy restaurant Food: - shredded pork with bean curd (#55): my kids absolute favorite dish (ordered not spicy) for years. They've had this dish at many other restaurants, but they request this dish at this specific restaurant every time. Flavors are simple, ingredients fresh and tasty. - Chinese okra with somen noodles (#44): my personal favorite dish. Chinese okra (si gua) cooked in a light broth with shrimp and thin noodles. It's delicious, warm, and not heavy. - General's Chicken (#33): my husband's favorite fried chicken cooked in a sweet/salty/mildly spicy sauce. This is a dish you want to eat at the restaurant, not take-out. - house pork ribs wrapped in lotus leaf (#50): another family favorite! Honestly, I feel like as we're getting older, we tend to order food that is not easy to make at home. This is an example of something that would be harder to replicate, so we appreciate the dish more. We've tried many other items, but listed above our favorites (that we order every time). Ambiance: Clean and practical restaurant. They've changed the interior a few times over the years, but we don't go there for the atmosphere. Restroom is through the kitchen, furniture is practical, but everything functions and allows us to enjoy a good meal. Service: Nice servers, straight to the point. Cash only! Overall, one of our favorite Taiwanese joints in this area. Kids will request this place by (Chinese) name!

Came for some authentic Taiwanese cuisine after a long road trip! Four of us were the only dine-in customers at this small & cozy restaurant, as we came for linner around 3 PM. Few others came in for take out. Food took some time to arrive, but service was warm and wonderful. The lady was so kind - always checked up on us, refilled our waters frequently, and small talked with us. Now for the family styled foods! The SALTED egg with bittermelon was surprisingly a good combo! Sauteed pork kidney came in a delicious soup sauce, great to pair with rice (we ordered two bowls). Beef tenderloin with black pepper sauce was a little on the salty side but had nice pepper flavor. My favorite was the sliced fish, so soft and delicious! Western Lake Beef Soup is typically my favorite to pair with entrees... but although it had all the right ingredients and plentiful beef, it came bland :/ we requested some salt and white pepper... and that did the trick! If ya gotta go, you gotta walk through the entire kitchen to the back. It was kinda interesting to see the behind the scenes, hard at work preparing our yummy linner :) CASH ONLY!!!
